Football Men’s: Unseen Side Revealed
A Very Toxic Place’: The Enduring Fight Against Homophobia in Men’s Football
The world of men’s professional football often presents a hostile and venomous environment for gay athletes. For the footballer, Josh Cavallo, this reality manifests as a daily barrage of violent threats and cruel online communications. Since his decision to come out publicly in 2021, the vitriol has been relentless. Messages telling him he should not exist on this planet and should cease breathing illustrate the severe nature of the abuse. This continuous stream of hatred has been a heavy burden, deeply affecting his personal and professional life. The experience is something no individual should have to endure, especially when their focus is on improving their performance on the field. The disgusting nature of these personal attacks highlights a dark side of the sport.
Four years ago, Cavallo, a midfielder for Adelaide United, stood as the globe’s only active professional male footballer in a premier league to be openly homosexual. This past summer marked a significant shift in his career. He departed Australia to join Peterborough Sports, a non-league club competing in English soccer's sixth tier, the National League North. Here, he plays before smaller crowds of around 400 people. The 25-year-old now balances his playing commitments for the Cambridgeshire-based part-timers with passionate advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. With over a million followers on Instagram, he leverages his profile to advocate for inclusion and fairness within the sport.
A Mountain to Climb
When questioned about the persistence of homophobia in football, Cavallo’s assessment is stark. The sport still has mountains of work to do. New issues highlighting the problem surface with alarming regularity, often weekly. He needed many years of immense personal struggle to build the personal fortitude to publicly state, "I am gay," a declaration he finally made on October 27, 2021. In a video released at the time, he articulated a simple desire: to participate in the game and be regarded with the same respect as any other player. His announcement followed that of Thomas Hitzlsperger, a former midfielder for Germany and Aston Villa, who shared his sexuality in 2014 after his retirement from the game.
At 21, Cavallo was establishing his reputation in Australia's A-League with Adelaide United. With the firm backing of his teammates, he chose to share his truth publicly. He recalls the uncertainty of that moment, not knowing what lay ahead. Yet, he felt it was the right step forward in his life. The emotional video, titled ‘Josh’s Truth’, quickly became a sensation across online networks. The response was overwhelming. His mobile phone was inundated with an incredible number of supportive messages, creating a powerful and affirming wave of solidarity that he found truly staggering. The courage displayed resonated with many across the globe.
A Wave of Support and a Tide of Hate
The global football community responded with significant gestures of support. Liverpool FC was among many prominent organizations worldwide to express solidarity. Jürgen Klopp, the manager at the time, voiced his gratitude for Cavallo's action, noting it had restarted a crucial conversation. Barcelona's defender Gerard Piqué also offered his backing via social media. He acknowledged that the soccer world was considerably behind and credited Cavallo with helping to propel it forward. Adelaide United released a statement praising their "courageous" and "extraordinary" athlete. However, this positive reception was not universal. Others were far less accepting, and the backlash was swift and brutal, revealing the deep-seated prejudice that still exists within the sport.
Almost immediately, rival fans began targeting Cavallo with homophobic harassment. The verbal assaults were a harsh introduction to his new reality as an openly gay athlete. In one particular event in January 2022, a tangible consequence of this bigotry emerged when the Melbourne Victory club faced a penalty of A$5,000. The fine was issued after its supporters directed anti-gay chants at Cavallo during a contest. He described the slurs as both painful and insulting not just to him, but to his entire community. He consciously chose not to react to the taunts, understanding that any response would likely only embolden the antagonists and intensify the hostile atmosphere for him.
Physical Threats and Mental Toll
The abuse was not confined to stadiums. A frightening physical altercation at an Australian service station escalated the threats from verbal to physical. Someone who knew him from the extensive news coverage assaulted him. This assault was a terrifying moment, a stark realisation that some people harboured a genuine desire to cause him physical harm. The unending flow of violent threats and hateful messages has understandably taken a significant toll on his psychological well-being. He finds it profoundly sad to have to repeatedly justify his right to exist on a football pitch simply due to his identity. This is a burden that heterosexual players are never asked to bear in the sport.
While he often presents a smiling and positive exterior to the public, Cavallo admits there are difficult days. During these times, he leans on his fiancé, Leighton, for support. His partner sees the side of his life that remains hidden from the public eye, witnessing the immense strain and emotional turmoil caused by the constant negativity and threats. This private struggle underscores the immense personal cost that comes with being a visible pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights in such a challenging environment. His resilience is a testament to his character, but the emotional scars are an undeniable part of his journey.

The Online Abuse Epidemic
The online world serves as a primary battleground where much of this abuse is delivered. For many professional footballers, social media is an extension of their workplace. The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) has recognised this and has been calling for better protection for players online since 2015. However, the anonymity afforded by these platforms makes it incredibly difficult to identify and sanction the perpetrators. A 2020 study commissioned by the PFA found over 3,000 explicitly abusive messages sent to just 44 high-profile players over a six-week period. A staggering 56% of this discriminatory abuse was racist in nature, showing the intersectionality of online hate.
Further research by Ofcom and The Alan Turing Institute revealed the shocking scale of the problem in the Premier League. During the first five months of the 2021-22 season, their analysis of over 2.3 million tweets directed at players found almost 60,000 were abusive. This equates to one abusive tweet every four minutes. The report found that seven out of ten Premier League footballers face abuse on Twitter. While the vast majority of interactions are positive, the sheer volume of negative and harmful content creates a toxic digital environment that has significant real-world consequences for the players’ mental wellbeing and safety.
Inspiring Others and the Premier League Void
Cavallo's courageous choice to disclose his sexuality had a ripple effect. In May 2022, it helped inspire 17-year-old Jake Daniels, a forward for Blackpool, to announce that he was the United Kingdom's only openly gay active male professional soccer player. Despite these courageous steps, a significant void remains. There are currently no current players in the Premier League who have publicly identified as gay or bisexual. The impact of a player from that league coming out would be monumental. Cavallo believes it would produce a massive positive change in terms of shifting attitudes and fostering acceptance. Such a move would undoubtedly accelerate progress and provide a powerful role model for countless others.
However, he is also realistic about the immense challenges such a player would face. He refuses to "sugar-coat" the reality. Anyone taking that step would be met with a torrent of scary and threatening responses. The environment within men's soccer, as it currently stands, is an incredibly poisonous one for any player who is openly homosexual. The pressure, scrutiny, and inevitable abuse would be immense. The courage required to navigate that path cannot be underestimated, and the support systems would need to be incredibly robust to protect the individual from the predictable onslaught of negativity and hate that would surely follow such a groundbreaking announcement.
The Shadow of Toxic Masculinity
The tragic story of Justin Fashanu, Britain’s first openly gay male footballer who took his own life in 1998, casts a long shadow over the sport. Twenty-seven years later, Cavallo speaks of the enduring "toxic masculinity" that permeates men’s soccer. This culture is evident at matches, where the intensely hostile and hyper-masculine atmosphere from the crowd are palpable. He asserts that a tremendous amount of work is still required to build a secure place within football for players like himself and Jake Daniels. The slow progress in seeing more players come out is a clear indicator of the deeply entrenched cultural problems that persist within the sport.
He remains committed to championing his beliefs. His goal is to dismantle the harmful masculinity found in changing rooms and build a genuinely safe culture. Various organisations are working towards similar goals. Initiatives like Football v Homophobia and Comic Relief-funded programmes are using sport to challenge harmful gender norms and promote positive masculinity. These efforts aim to educate and change mindsets from the grassroots level up, recognising that true change requires a fundamental cultural shift within the sport and the communities that surround it, from the youth leagues to the professional stadiums.
A New Chapter in England
His move to Peterborough Sports has been a positive one on a personal level. The reception within the locker room has been welcoming, with everyone being nice and respectful. When considering his next career move, Cavallo prioritised discovering a team where he would be comfortable. He had received offers from clubs in several other countries, but the culture and environment at Peterborough Sports felt right. The way the club was presented to him promised a place where he could live authentically outside of his professional duties. This sense of security and acceptance was the deciding factor in his move to English non-league football.
The club’s owner, Tim Woodward, never doubted that the supporters would embrace Cavallo warmly. He acknowledges the move from Australia was a significant step but mentioned he has adjusted very well. The owner stated he never doubted their fans, who have genuinely welcomed Josh whenever he has taken the field. He also confirmed that the organization has protective measures in place for Josh should any issues arise. The club signed Cavallo based on his ability, after viewing his performance footage from Adelaide United. While a recent change in management has seen him spend some time on the bench, the belief is that his talent will shine through and he will get his opportunity to prove himself.

Confronting FIFA’s Choices
While finding a welcoming club environment has been positive, Cavallo remains highly critical of football's global governing body, FIFA. He strongly condemns the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, a nation where same-sex relationships are illegal. The situation is set to repeat itself, with the 2034 tournament scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia, another country where homosexuality is criminalised and can even carry the death penalty. He finds it scary that the sport’s most significant event is being hosted in nations that could imprison people like him merely for their existence.
He gets heartbreaking messages from people in these countries, who fear for their safety and freedom. These are often pleas for help from individuals on the verge of being jailed for their identity. The fact that countries with huge soccer followings do not accept LGBTQ+ people is a painful reality. These are frequently the source of the targeted abuse he receives. The selection of these host nations by FIFA sends a message that the safety and human rights of LGBTQ+ players and fans are not a priority, a stance that deeply troubles activists and athletes alike.
The Path Forward: A Purpose for Change
In spite of all these obstacles, Cavallo is unwavering in his decision to speak out. His involvement in soccer has granted him a platform to initiate important dialogues, even within the traditionally closed environment of the changing room. This has given him the opportunity to educate teammates who are open to learning and challenge their own preconceptions. He has accepted that not everyone will be supportive of who he is. Despite this, he feels he has found his own supportive network and a true sense of community. This support network is crucial in helping him navigate the often-difficult path he has chosen to walk.
His core mission has become clear: to bring about meaningful change. This mission drives him to continue being a visible and vocal advocate for equality and inclusion in a sport that desperately needs it. His journey is not just about his personal career as a footballer. It is about paving the way for future generations of LGBTQ+ athletes, hoping they will not have to experience the same path of hostility and fear. The ultimate goal is to transform football into a space where all players are judged on their skill and character, not their sexuality. It is a monumental task, but one he is determined to see through.
