In December 2024, the lead European Union data privacy regulator fined Meta €251 million for a 2018 Facebook security breach that affected 29 million users. Capital FM also reported that in September 2024, the DPC fined Meta €91 million (£75 million) after finding the company had stored certain user passwords without encryption.
