The therapeutic properties of these thermal waters were recognized in antiquity. Atop the white cliffs, the Attalid kings of Pergamon founded the Greco-Roman spa city of Hierapolis in the 2nd century BCE. The city became a popular healing centre, and people from all over the Roman Empire travelled there to bathe in the mineral-rich pools, which were believed to cure various ailments. The extensive ruins of Hierapolis, including a well-preserved theatre, temples, and a vast necropolis, stand today as a testament to its long history as a destination for health and wellness.

Walking on Eggshells

In 1988, UNESCO added the thermal pools at Hierapolis-Pamukkale to its register of World Heritage Sites, recognising its combined natural and cultural importance. In the past, hotels were built on the site, and visitors could walk freely over the delicate travertine formations, causing significant damage and staining. To preserve this fragile wonder, authorities have established certain limitations. The hotels have been removed, and visitors must now walk barefoot on a designated path to prevent further harm. These conservation efforts aim to protect the 'cotton castle,' ensuring its ethereal beauty remains for generations to come.
