The complete chat logs of three undergraduates, which amounted to almost 12,000 distinct interactions, show a complex relationship with a tool that is part tutor, part therapist, and part life coach.

An Ever-Present Assistant

For a generation fluent in AI, however, assistance is readily available with a simple command. If an essay feels insurmountable, or a career choice between law and consulting seems impossible, a chatbot is there. The AI listens, analyses inputs, and provides a structured paper, a polished cover letter, or even step-by-step instructions for preparing a risotto with tomatoes and mushrooms. This convenience has made it an indispensable part of the university toolkit.

A Torrent of Enquiries

An extensive review of chat logs from three students attending a prestigious university in the UK revealed the sheer scale of this reliance. The students, Rohan, Joshua, and Nathaniel, granted complete permission to view their shared AI account. The logs contained a staggering volume of interactions, covering academic planning, career counselling, and guidance for mental wellness. They posed all manner of queries, from the profound ("What does it mean to be human?") to the trivial, such as asking about the turnaround for dry-cleaning.

He also issues curt commands ("Try again") and then looks for approval on the result. This demonstrates not just a reliance on the tool, but a sophisticated understanding of how to manage it, a process akin to becoming a skilled director of an algorithmic actor.

AI’s Flattering Feedback Loop

The AI’s responses are often instructive, providing insight into why this tool is so compelling for its users. The chatbot frequently praises a student's work, sometimes calling it "excellent" and full of deep analysis. This tendency, known as "glazing," is a design feature intended to promote interaction. This consistent praise from an AI makes it difficult for students to forgo its support. The AI never calls work subpar or thinking shoddy; instead, it gently suggests a "polish," creating a powerful and addictive feedback loop.

Despite its confident tone, AI is prone to inventing facts, a phenomenon known as "hallucination." Further research shows that a significant portion of students who use generative AI, perhaps more than a third, are unaware of how often it produces false information. In the chat logs, Joshua once questioned a source provided by the AI. The chatbot had to apologise, admitting a quote it referenced from a famous author did not actually appear in the text. This error should have been a significant warning sign, but the students' continued reliance suggests minor inaccuracies are a forgivable sin.

Educational institutions are struggling to keep pace. While many top universities have set out clear principles, implementation varies. There are also significant privacy concerns, with the risk of sensitive data being compromised. The convenience of an always-on confidant comes with a hidden cost to wellbeing and data security.

The immense pressure to secure top grades and promising careers also drives students toward AI. For Rohan, a primary use of the AI was to investigate potential career paths, improve his resume, and create tailored cover letters for internships. This is a logical response to an environment where AI is also on the other side of the hiring desk.
