Police Describe a Detestable and Corrupt Person

Following the sentencing, a senior police officer did not mince words, branding Zou a detestable and morally corrupt person. A detective inspector told reporters that the extraordinary scope of his criminal acts across two different countries identifies him as among the most persistent and dangerous predators they had ever encountered. Metropolitan Police Commander Kevin Southworth stressed that the thoughts of the force have consistently been with the courageous survivors of Zou's heinous activities. He expressed hope that the lengthy sentence would bring some small measure of comfort to the women who have endured immeasurable suffering. He used social media platforms like WeChat and dating apps such as Soul to identify and connect with his targets, who were predominantly women of Chinese heritage. After arranging to meet, he would invite them to his apartment, where he would use drugs to incapacitate them. Forensic investigation revealed the use of Butanediol, an industrial chemical that the body converts into GHB, a substance commonly referred to as a "date-rape" drug. Pipettes and other drug paraphernalia were discovered in his flat, alongside the video evidence and the victims' belongings, painting a clear picture of his predatory toolkit.

The profound and enduring impact of Zou’s attacks was laid bare in court through victim statements. One survivor conveyed the persistent torment of the assault, saying she remains "haunted" by what happened. UCL suspended Zou as soon as they were informed of the allegations and have expressed that they were "appalled by these horrific offences."

In the wake of Zou's conviction, the university issued a statement expressing their horror at the offences committed by him and paying tribute to the bravery of the women who came forward. Dr Michael Spence, the university's President & Provost, highlighted the institution's focus on providing comprehensive support for its community. The university also emphasized its ongoing commitment to preventing sexual violence through educational programmes and partnerships with specialist organisations like Rape Crisis and Stamp Out Spiking, aiming to protect and educate its community.
