Unprecedented levels of long-term sickness are reported, with 2.8 million individuals currently absent from work due to extended illnesses, a figure significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. Furthermore, industrial action, exemplified by strikes at companies like Deliveroo and Uber Eats, highlights worker dissatisfaction concerning pay and conditions. Teachers, too, voice their frustrations about excessive unpaid overtime, labeling it "daylight robbery." Conversely, government responses to successful pilot schemes, such as the 61 organisations trial of reduced working hours to a four-day week, indicate a lack of proactive measures from policymakers. Consequently, many employees across various workplace sectors feel undervalued and exhausted. Meanwhile, company leadership and policymakers appear resistant to considering alternative workplace approaches. However, an alternative model exists.

A Strikingly Different Approach: Timpson's Upside-Down Management 

My experience at Timpson, a company I’ve been associated with since 1995, presents a compelling counterpoint. We have experienced sustained success, inextricably linked to prioritizing employee well-being. This year, we plan to expand, opening 50 new stores, and recruiting an additional 160 employees. In this approach, a strong corporate culture coupled with continuous investment in colleagues are vital for navigating disruptions. This approach is encapsulated in what we call "upside-down management". 

Putting Employees First: A Paradigm Shift 

Our board meetings, unlike some, prioritize employee happiness and well-being, in addition to financial success. Our finance director, Paresh, for instance, contributes significantly to discussions, not primarily about monetary matters, but about the methods we use to cultivate colleague happiness and care for them. In essence, the more we invest in our culture of kindness, the more successful our business performance becomes. Furthermore, our shop staff, those directly interacting with customers, possess considerable autonomy. Their decisions are not bound by rigid office guidelines. In reality, the only constraints are to collect revenue and maintain a professional appearance. Every other function within the business exists to support them. Ultimately, this philosophy recognizes that employee loyalty and passion are far more valuable than the tangible assets of any business. 

Addressing Challenges: Turning the Tide 

Many struggling businesses miss this crucial point. Instead of focusing on their most valuable asset – their employees – they react to declining sales by cutting costs, raising prices, and delaying investments in training. This approach, regrettably, often leads to a downward spiral including high absence rates, low morale, and even strikes. Considerably, business leaders should critically assess alternative approaches. What if business leaders prioritized fostering the best possible working environment for employees?

This is entirely feasible. This prioritization of employee well-being ultimately fosters exceptional customer service. Further, it is only just and fair to provide much support when seeking great returns from staff.

Moreover, imagine a complete shift in leadership styles. Eliminate unnecessary budgets, minimize meetings, and ban memos. At Timpson, our "cut the crap" committee directly addresses redundant reports and processes. Despite seeming traditional, I still prioritize handwritten letters to colleagues, expressing gratitude and well-wishes for new roles. These strategies are far from conventional business school teachings. Different businesses will undoubtedly require different implementation, yet the fundamental concept remains the same - valuing employees as individuals, not expendable resources.

Employment statistics are more than just indicators of economic health and societal trends. They reflect our collective values and the kind of society we aspire to create. In essence, they illustrate the importance we place on human interaction and the significance of employee well-being.
