Heithaus recalls tagging two adult male alligators of comparable size, captured just over twenty metres apart. This variability suggests that, like many other species, individual alligators possess different "personalities" or behavioural tendencies. Some may be inherently more inclined to roam, while others prefer to remain within a familiar territory.

Observations previously noted American alligators occasionally entering marine environments, but these were considered rare occurrences. Unlike crocodiles, alligators lack efficient salt glands for processing excess sodium chloride. A percentage of the hatchlings raised must be returned to the wild, typically at a size where their survival chances are much higher. The remaining alligators are raised like livestock, harvested for their skins and meat, providing economic incentives for wetland conservation. This sustainable use model has been instrumental in the alligator's comeback and provides a framework for managing other crocodilian species globally. 

Miccosukee Headstarting Efforts 

Mirroring these larger commercial programs, the Miccosukee Tribe also engages in headstarting initiatives on a community scale. Family members would rush out during sudden cold snaps to collect vulnerable eggs, ensuring their survival by bringing them to a more controlled environment. These actions demonstrate a deep, practical commitment to the well-being of their alligator neighbours. 

Feasible Coexistence 

These diverse conservation efforts, coupled with growing scientific understanding, strongly suggest that human-alligator coexistence is not only possible but also ecologically beneficial. The narrative of the alligator as merely a dangerous problem animal requires revision. Christopher Murray emphasizes that historical perspectives often differed; many cultures viewed these powerful reptiles with reverence or assigned them sacred significance. While caution remains essential when sharing space with formidable predators, fear need not define the relationship. Understanding their ecological value promotes respect and encourages strategies for peaceful coexistence. 

Living Alongside Gators 

Florida's state wildlife agency actively promotes coexistence through education and management. They provide resources like brochures and signage advising residents and visitors on safe practices. Key recommendations include maintaining a safe distance, never feeding alligators (which is illegal and dangerous), swimming only in designated areas during daylight, and keeping pets leashed and away from water edges. For properties near water, fences at least 1.4 metres (4.5 feet) high can deter alligators, which are surprisingly capable climbers. Responsible human behaviour is the cornerstone of minimizing conflict. 

Managing Nuisance Animals 

Recognising that conflicts inevitably arise, particularly in rapidly developing areas, the state operates a nuisance alligator program. Residents concerned about an alligator exhibiting potentially dangerous behaviour can call a dedicated hotline. Trained and contracted trappers respond to assess the situation.
