How Fraudsters Manipulate Facebook with Fake Articles 

The Rise of AI-Generated Scams 

In recent times, the digital landscape has witnessed a surge in fraudulent activities, particularly on social media platforms like Facebook. These scams often leverage artificial intelligence to craft compelling, yet entirely fabricated, news articles, hoping to lure unsuspecting users into investing in fraudulent schemes. For instance, a recent wave of fake articles surfaced on Facebook, using templates resembling reputable news sources like the BBC. These articles purported to feature interviews with well-known personalities like Zoe Ball, Jeremy Clarkson, and Chris Tarrant, showcasing their supposed success with cryptocurrency investments. However, these interviews never transpired. The articles were entirely fabricated, part of a larger scheme to deceive and defraud online users. The perpetrators behind these schemes aim to capitalise on the trust and familiarity people have with recognised brands and public figures. Their objective remains clear: to tempt users to click through to a full article and, subsequently, invest in a bogus investment scheme linked within the article. 

Facebook's Advert System and the Cloaking Technique 

Naturally, concerns arise regarding how these deceptive ads circumvent Facebook's automated detection mechanisms. Speaking to Tony Gee, a seasoned cybersecurity consultant at Penn Test Partners, insights into the method employed by fraudsters begin to emerge. Mr Gee explains that the perpetrators manipulate website links within Facebook ads. Following an examination of a scam page's URL, Mr Gee determined the ad was likely a paid-for Facebook advert. This assumption stemmed from the unique value incorporated into the URL – a value Facebook assigns to track outbound clicks. This method of tracking aids in understanding ad performance and user engagement. Facebook's parent company, Meta, maintains that they do not condone fraudulent activity and have actively removed reported ads. 

However, the question remains: how do scammers manage to infiltrate Facebook's system in the first place? According to Alan Woodward, a professor of computer science at the University of Surrey, the fraudsters employ tools that swiftly redirect users to a different webpage. Initially, the advert links to an innocuous page, devoid of any malicious intent. This harmless page allows the advert to bypass Facebook's initial review process. Furthermore, once Facebook has approved the advert, the fraudsters utilise redirects that promptly reroute users to a fraudulent page, intending to steal their financial data.

How Redirect Commands Aid Scammers in Evading Detection 

"If you have control over a website, incorporating a redirect command becomes relatively simple," says Prof Woodward. He indicates that before a user's browser displays the original web page, a redirect command redirects the browser to a different website. Furthermore, fraudsters can continuously change the destination of these redirects, making it difficult to trace their origins and maintain their deception. "The moment you manage to mask the true nature of a URL, it's a goldmine for scammers," he adds. This technique, known as "cloaking", facilitates the evasion of social media platform's review processes, as the fraudsters expertly conceal their intentions during the initial review phase. Meta acknowledges they are refining their automated detection systems based on their understanding of this cloaking tactic. 

Real-Life Consequences of Online Scams 

These online scams carry real-world consequences, impacting individuals financially and emotionally. Margaret (not her real name), a retired resident of Buckinghamshire, fell victim to a fraudulent Instagram ad that mimicked an ITV article. The scam featured a fabricated interview with Robert Peston, where he allegedly discussed a lucrative investment opportunity. Sadly, Margaret trusted both Mr Peston and the ITV brand, leading her to invest £250. Subsequently, the scam involved far more than simply the monetary loss. Margaret further submitted pictures of her passport and both sides of her credit card. Unfortunately, her trust was misplaced. 

In addition to the financial loss, Margaret also found herself bombarded with phone calls and emails, following her initial investment. The callers possessed an American accent and assured her that her money was actively generating profits. However, Margaret's suspicions grew as the calls and emails increased, particularly when she was questioned about her income, savings, and future investment plans. 

"I contacted my bank and thankfully received a refund," Margaret recounts. "Nevertheless, the scammers haven't stopped their relentless pursuit." 
Regrettably, Margaret still fields daily calls from the scammers, with some callers even claiming to represent the US National Security Agency, offering to assist her in investigating the scam. 

"My mental health has suffered as a result of this incident," Margaret conveys. "I believe I am at significant risk, including identity theft and the potential for further financial loss. They demonstrate extreme persistence and are extremely dangerous individuals." 

Consumer Advocacy and Regulatory Response 

This issue has prompted the UK's consumer watchdog, Which?, to investigate. "Malicious advertisers have a knack for masking web links or impersonating established brands like the BBC to bypass online platforms' reporting systems," explains Rocio Concha, director of policy and advocacy at Which?. "Consumers often fail to recognise the presence of a scam or a deepfake until it's too late," she adds. "It shouldn't be the responsibility of consumers to safeguard themselves from fraudulent content online." Consequently, Rocio advocates for Ofcom to leverage its authority under the Online Safety Act to enforce the verification of advertisers' legitimacy, preventing these schemes from reaching consumers. 

Ofcom has confirmed that tackling online fraud remains a priority for them. "The UK's newly implemented online safety legislation will play a vital role in hindering fraudsters' operations," they further stated. "These new laws mandate that online services assess the risk of harm posed to users by illegal content, including fraud. Additionally, they are required to take proactive measures to protect users and remove illegal content upon identification or notification." 

The Role of Social Media Platforms in Combating Fraud 

Furthermore, Nicolas Corry, managing director at financial investigation firm Skadi, highlights the need for greater diligence from social media platforms. Mr Corry expresses concern regarding the prevalence of online fraud on platforms like Facebook. "These corporations rake in massive profits while simultaneously exposing individuals to fraud," he highlights. "Financial companies and victims themselves bear the brunt of the financial consequences," he adds. Mr Corry believes that social media firms should enhance their advert verification processes, scrutinising every advert and its associated links before they appear online. These measures would assist in minimising the dissemination of fraudulent material and protect users from falling prey to online scams.

Alongside fraudulent investment schemes, the proliferation of fake news and disinformation on social media platforms, like Facebook, poses a significant threat to public perception and societal harmony.
