Firstly, the Marine Biology course introduces you to the Ocean as a Habitat, laying the foundational knowledge required to appreciate the complexity and diversity of marine environments. You will explore the unique characteristics that define the ocean as a living space, setting the stage for more detailed studies.
Following this, we delve into Patterns of Association, a module that unveils the intricate relationships and dependencies among marine organisms. This section highlights the ecological interactions that sustain the marine food web, from the microscopic to the majestic.
A highlight of the Marine Biology online course is the comprehensive coverage of Phytoplankton groups. Here, you will uncover the critical role these microscopic organisms play in oceanic ecosystems, serving as the primary producers at the base of the marine food chain.
The journey continues with an in-depth look at Marine Plants, where you will discover the vital ecosystems created by seaweeds and mangroves. These areas are not only fascinating in their own right but are crucial for the health of the planet, providing habitat, nursery grounds, and oxygen.
Microbial Heterotrophs and Invertebrates are next on the list, where you will explore the less visible but equally important components of marine ecosystems. This module provides insights into the diversity of life forms that play pivotal roles in nutrient cycling and ecosystem health.
Marine vertebrates – Fishes, Reptiles, Seabirds, and Marine mammals – form a captivating part of the curriculum. This segment brings you closer to the charismatic creatures that capture our imaginations, from the colorful fishes that inhabit coral reefs to the majestic whales traversing the open sea.
The Marine Biology Diploma course also takes you to the dynamic environments of Estuaries and Coastal Seas, areas where the land meets the sea. These sections focus on the ecological significance of these regions, their biodiversity, and the challenges they face.
Coral reefs, often referred to as the rainforests of the sea, are covered extensively. You will learn about their structure, the incredible biodiversity they support, and the threats to their survival. This module not only educates but also inspires conservation efforts.
The open sea and The Deep Sea Floor modules transport you to the vast, mysterious realms of the ocean. Here, you will learn about the life forms that inhabit these remote areas, the adaptations that enable their survival, and the ongoing exploration efforts to uncover the secrets they hold.
Throughout the Marine Biology online course, each unit concludes with a multiple-choice examination. This assessment method ensures you grasp the key concepts of each module, providing immediate feedback on your progress. Very interesting course. I have always had an interest in the marine world but never had the time. Now seemed the prefect opportunity. So glad I did. Watched episodes of Blue Planet (there is also other BBC programmes which were useful to me) whilst doing the course to help with some of the concepts. Overall very good. Recommended

A very good course with a good range of topics. The unit end tests were a good way of making sure one understood the information. This is a good introductory course.

It’s a good course, although repetitive in places. Also some one the questions in the tests are dodgy, either not worded right, or my favourite where I answered right by selecting answer a but was wrong because there was an option that said “only answer a” which doesn’t make sense but hey! Killed 6 days.
