On this day
In 1849 Fyodor Dostoevsky, author of Crime and Punishment (1866), received a last-minute reprieve from death by firing squad. He was sent to a Siberian labour camp until 1854; 1895 the physicist Wilhelm Röntgen took a radiograph of his wife’s hand, the first medical x-ray. She exclaimed: “I have seen my death”; in 1972, 14 survivors from an aircraft that crashed at 12,000ft in the Argentine Andes on October 13 were rescued, after two passengers made a two-day trek for help. There were 29 fatalities, and parts of their bodies were eaten in the struggle to survive; in 1989 the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin reopened, having been closed since 1961. Helmut Kohl, the West German chancellor, met Hans Modrow, the East German prime minister; in 2000 the singer Madonna and film-maker Guy Ritchie married at Skibo Castle, Scotland. They divorced on November 21, 2009; in 2018 more than 400 people died in Indonesia when a tsunami hit coastal towns after volcanic activity from Anak Krakatau led to undersea landslides.
Nature notes
A good way to learn more about the wildlife in your area is to pay attention to animal droppings. Badgers dig rows of latrines, often along paths or fencelines, to mark the borders of their territories: shallow scrapes filled with dark, loose stools, often — depending on the time of year — tinted with purple sloes or wild cherries. Fox scat is dark, with a twist at one end, and is often deposited on molehills or other raised spots where its scent can more easily carry; grey rodent or rabbit fur is often visible, and they can be studded with the tiny bones of small mammals. Hedgehog poo is smaller and black, and glints with the wing cases of insects.
